Georgia Brouner
I am a UNSW graduate with a Bachelor of Psychological Science (Management) and First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology). Currently, I am studying a Master of Global Health/Master of Infectious Disease Intelligence. My previous research focused on whether Antarctic bacteria natural products contained antitumor properties that may be developed for lung cancer treatment. I have a passion for science particularly in the scope of infectious disease epidemiology, microbiology immunology and cancer research. However, I am also a big advocate for women in STEMM, which is why I created the UNSW Women in Science Peer Mentor Program to support girls through science degrees at university, and I aim to use my studies in global health to further support women in all areas on a global scale. I am currently interested in research involving infectious disease outbreaks and chronic episodic illnesses, which I aim to study or work with both in Australia and overseas.
Review/Reflections on your experience as an intern with CHETRE
My time at CHETRE was fantastic, the people I worked with were caring, supportive and passionate about their careers, which made me appreciate the time and energy that goes into public health initiatives. During my time working with CHETRE I assisted the Homeless Hub Needs Assessment Working group by working on a needs assessment project protocol. This was incredibly insightful and provided me with valuable soft and technical skill, which will support me in my future career pathways.
I would recommend anyone with an interest in contributing to the public health sector to apply for an internship with CHETRE. It will provide you with valuable advice to understand the professional work environment and allow you to make lasting connections with public health professionals.
